Submerged Picnic Tables

Mirror carp

I'm not sure when it became fashionable for ice fishermen to move the park picnic tables out onto the ice when the lake / river is frozen over but two different paces I fish that are about 50 miles apart in different counties have this issue.

If you are an ice fisherman and you see someone doing this, consider suggesting they don't. If you are not comfortable speaking to them about it, report it to the parks and recreation department or DNR as appropriate.

I'm guessing there are submerged picnic tables in other bodies of water as well.

It's really getting ridiculous at this point (and frustrating).

Huron River Carp Fishing

I live near the Huron River. It's a short, convenient drive to fish there whenever I am short on time. This spot is seasonal and is not open year round. It opens around Memorial Day and closes in October (or maybe a little earlier). It's usually a good summer spot, but has been very, very weedy in 2020.

Here are a few Huron River carp I caught in 2018 in a very good summer fishing spot.

A couple of years ago I had the best carp fishing day of my life in this spot and landed more than 35 common carp in a 9 hour day.

I don't often grow tired of landing too many fish, but that day I was hoping for a reprieve a couple of times. Landing 35 fish by yourself, re-baiting, recasting, etc. in light rain and 90 degree weather will wear you down just a little.

River Carping in Michigan

Rivers offer a wide variety of carp fishing opportunities. There are big rivers, small rivers and every size in between. Quick running rivers are more challenging for carp fishing. When the water runs fast, it's best to find a current break like a dike, a boat, a bridge, pier, etc. that might provide the fish some relief from the strong current.

As a general rule, the wider and deeper rivers are difficult because they are just so darned big. The potential for big carp is present in rivers like Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, St. Clair and Detroit, but the same benefits also make it difficult to find the fish. Sight fishing on those big rivers is nearly impossible without a boat. Smaller rivers like Saginaw, Huron, Rouge, Ecorse or Raisin make it easier, but success is often coupled with the specific time of year. Timing plays a big part. The ability to access the water is also important. There is a lot to be said for owning a pontoon boat, jon boat or kayak.

If the carp won't come to you, then you must go to the carp if you want to catch them.

Here are a few pictures from early in the fall of 2017.

I plan to spend some more time fishing the local rivers in 2018. Hopefully I can get on some fish on a more consistent basis.

River Carp Fishing

I headed out to a local river spot today and fished for a while. The day was fantastic with sunshine, light wind and overall great conditions. There were a couple of periods of light rain, but nothing to worry about.

I started slow with only 2 carp by noon, but things picked up in the afternoon hours. Here are a few pictures of today's catches.

These weren't quite the "river monsters" I was hoping for, but maybe they will grow up to be "river monsters" someday down the road.

Huroc Park Flat Rock Michigan

I was tempted to fish today. The sunshine was almost too good to pass up, but with 34 degrees and wind I couldn't pull the trigger on it. So I did the next best thing...I went scouting for carp fishing spots to try next spring.

A lot of people I know fish the Huron River in Flat Rock for carp. I haven't tried it, but it's on my list for next year.

Here are a few pictures I took today:

Huroc Park is the Huron River Community Park in Flat Rock. There are always several people fishing. The 34 degree temperatures didn't deter the 8 - 10 people fishing this area today throwing spinner baits into the fast moving water just past the bridge as it falls over another smaller dam.

I have no idea how deep it is up toward the dam, but I've seen plenty of videos on YouTube that demonstrate this area has a plentiful supply of average sized carp available.

Sunday Carp Fishing

The weather was perfect for carp fishing on Easter Sunday. There was a very light breeze, bright sunshine and I had 5 or 6 hours for fishing.

I decided to try a new spot today, so we headed out to North Hydro Park, which is located below the Ford Lake dam in Ypsilanti.

It was a fantastic day to be outside with temps nearing 70 degrees. This is a spot that I plan to return to again soon. It's got plenty of shoreline, plenty of shade, restrooms nearby, plenty of parking and it's only 4 miles form my house.

Here's a picture of my rod pod.
